DI is used for:

  • possession (translated as of or saxon genitive)
  • origin (from, of)
  • content (of)
  • topic (about)
  • material or ingredients
  • cause or reason (di)
  • measure or quantity
  • time expressions (in, at, during)
  • comparison (than)

Examples:

A is used for:

  • place (at, in)
  • direction (to)
  • indirect object, destination (to)
  • distance (away)
  • time (at, in)
  • before the infinitive (to)
  • giving a substantive an adverbial or adjectival meaning

    Examples:

    DA is used for:

    • origin (from, of)
    • direction (to)
    • location (at)
    • time (since)
    • motion (through)
    • agent (by)
    • value
    • purpose
    • characteristics (with)

    Examples:

    IN is used for:

    • location
    • direction (countries, regions and big islands)
    • motion
    • means of transport
    • material
    • language

    Examples:

    CON is used for:

    • company (with)
    • means of transport (by)
    • tool (with, by)
    • way
    • characteristics (with)
    • comparison

    Examples:

    SU is used for:

    • location (on)
    • topic (about)
    • approximation
    • distributive

    Examples:
    PER is used for:

    • destination (for)
    • duration (for)
    • motion (through)
    • cause (because of)
    • purpose (to)
    • imminence
    • price (for

    Examples:
    TRA/FRA are synonims. They are used for:

    • position (between, among)
    • time (in)
    • distance (from here)
    • relation

    Examples:
    When some prepositions are followed by a definite article they merge into a single word, called articulated preposition.
